Why are democrats soft on crime?

Or is it a myth propagated by the right?

It seems to hurt the democrats that they are perceived as consistently soft on crime, unwilling to take a stance and protect businesses and families from gang crime, petty theft and street violence.

But is this a valid accusation to level at Joe Biden and Kamala Harris? This presidential candidate and running mate would appear to be better equipped to bolster confidence for undecided voters that they will indeed support law and order, and safety in the neighborhoods in a way American voters can believe.

It’s not that simple. Many cities that bad crime stats are run by far left local politicians whose stance is anti-racist to the point of automatically protecting persons of color almost regardless how compelling the evidence and track record against them. This happens in red states as much as it does in Oakland, Los Angeles and New York. This won’t change after 2020 elections. Trump has done a good job persuading his ultra-right base that inner cities should be taken over by federal troops and that their mayors, DAs and supervisors should be taken away and jailed. All nonsense of course, but the left’s backlash against the conservatives’ position is not well thought out. Conservatives have an awful track record with crime and punishment. Their policies have incarcerated millions of poor black men and women and failed to give most of them any chance or rehabilitating and rejoining the ranks of the employed, maybe even the middle classes.
