We support you all leaving SF and making a bit more space for us who love it here. We cannot imagine being happy in Atlanta, Austin, Savannah, Kansas or Portland. Sorry, they all come in a poor second place compared to SF bay area.
The exodus from here makes a lot of sense. Here are the main reasons you should move away: 1) you're retiring or slowing down - go for it. Get out of the fast lane and catch your breath. You don't need a skyscraper luxury apartment or a Tesla Model X. 2) you're a blue collar or other 'modest income' worker: get outta here, get to where prices are less nuts and you can have more time with family and less commute madness. 3) you're a tech worker but you've given up dreaming of great wealth - you just want some balance in your life. Fair enough - any of the favorite exodus destinations will give you that. 4) you hate tech people - well, you should hurry up and GTFO and it doesn't really matter where you go because 90% of America is the opposite of our innovative, curiosity culture.
Of all the things you will miss - the bay views, the amazing climate, the ocean and the cool summers thanks to the marine layer, the wine country, the diversity, the density of brilliant people - you will miss the mentality and the mindset more than anything else. You'll miss mixing with dreamers who imagine crazy new inventions and are working nights and weekends to make them come true. You'll miss the proximity to innovators, 24x7 you're always 3 feet from someone plotting to redesign the world. When you move into your bigger house in Alpharetta GA you will be surrounded by flatlanders who think the world is just fine as it is. Wanna go see the monster truck show tomorrow night?
