Some thoughts on the great resignation

Lots of interesting articles on Medium about the great resignation, how work sucks, bosses suck, and how many people simply refuse to go back to work. As usual, it gets politicized. The red people say shut up and get a job, and they say we should cut all unemployment benefits today. The blue people have very little to say about the underlying economic factors — because most of them can’t spell economics — and have many thoughts on why people are right not to go back to work.

I’m writing from a reasonably happy and grateful place: I ran a company from 2012 to 2017 and then another company from 2017 to 2021, until we went out of business and I realized I was tired, broke, and needed to take a new direction. I normally support everyone who wants to go out and start a business, but in my case I was going in the opposite direction. I started a job search. After facing some pretty scary amounts of ageism and after an 8 month job search during Covid’s weird renormalization of the economy, I landed a great job doing something I really like. I make good money, work from home, have no commute or travel requirements, and I work 40–50 hours a week.
