I twice tried going from tech back into mainstream America to work for a regular company. Oh good grief, said Charlie Brown. The mediocrity, the laziness, the slowness of the people were excruciating and shocking. The fear that reigns is also quite palpable, and amusing, provided you too don't get caught up in fear of losing your job. The hierarchy is very strong, so you do not offer ideas, argue, make suggestions or say no. This is why Geico isn't ever going to invent a new amazing disruptor technology the win the insurance game. Ever. This is why people over eat, fail to stay in shape, lose sleep, and die of heart attacks and strokes. This is why we have it way easier than most when we work for a tech company. I feel so sorry for all the pudgy office employees at America's B team of insurance, banks, healthcare companies, private equity firms and law firms. They're structure to advance the elites and grind the foot soldiers into a pulp then spit them out. It always baffles me that the far left in San Francisco bay area hates tech so much, when the alternative is such drudgery.
