How the left can stop losing support
Patience, tolerance and love.
Gandhi, MLK, Mandela and many 60’s, 70’s and 80’s Nobel Peace Prize winners all shared a few common traits. They were big picture visionaries, imagining a big world where all of us belong and nobody is excluded because of skin color or religion. They also saw that tolerance of dissent and disagreement is vital if we’re going to build a big tent.
The old left was happy to be labeled “bleeding heart liberals” and “tax and spend democrats” but they were able to remain inclusive, and hence managed to keep the union workers tuned while also addressing the urban poor, the immigrants and (many of) the educated suburban middle class.
Not so with the modern liberals, who really ought to find a new name that does not borrow the misnomer “liberal” because they are anything but liberal. You must conform to the woke movement’s agenda, or you shall be damned, stoned and excluded. You shall be demonized because you dared to think for yourself and questioned an element of the agenda. You laughed at “defund the police” or you asked whether white privilege is really something we should be waving around. You suggested that maybe 70% tax is a bit steep, or asked whether forcing Mark Zuckerberg to take down alt-right content is in line with freedom of speech principles. Now you are out.
