Hate billionaires?
Let’s unpack that shall we?
Hate rarely begets anything worth having. We know that, but here we are, busy hating.
We have to begin by agreeing there’s a horrible wealth gap in America, worse than many other countries, although not isolated here in US. 1% at the top of the scale own 40% (in some accounts, 50%) of all the wealth in the country. The bottom 40% don’t have $400 for an emergency. There are just under 600 billionaires and their wealth has gone up exponentially, even this year, the Covid year. Almost everyone outside of the top 10% by income is struggling, and absolutely everyone in the bottom 60% is not exactly living large.
The red people — the MAGA people — have been mobilized by the demographics of defeat: the blue collar jobs that once were great, are gone. Clever manipulators have harnessed the anger, told some victim stories, and pointed to the villains that caused all this misery. Globalization, check. Immigrants, well maybe but no, this is a play on racist incitement rather than a fact-based economic theory; yes immigrant labor can bring down wages to some extent, let’s give this a 1/2 point. The liberal elites, excuse me? Yes, the liberal elites have stolen your jobs and sent them to India and China.
