Great article, and I agree in principle.

What's stunning is the stupidity of the comments on here. Most blue voters are so calcified in their hatred of all things red that they cannot contemplate a conciliatory move by the blue people that might make America feel like a country. They're not unlike the Palestinians and the Israelis and their fossilized hatred of each other. Nothing can get done while two tribes hate each other with such venom. One side must yield a little, offer an olive branch. Here's what we did do merit the wrath of the uneducated red people: we sponsored a new concept for American industry to replace the factories and the union workers and the coal mines. It was a techno-centric America with a flattened, open-borders global trading planet at our doorstep. Wall street, Silicon Valley and Hollywood would do well. The rust belt and the farm belt would not. We knew that, and we did it anyway. Here we are. Now perhaps we could elaborate on this concept to make it inclusive of people who can't program software or trade derivatives, but instead want to operate warehouses or work on production lines.
