Dear President Biden

(future dated letter)

Congratulations on your landslide victory back in November 2020, despite the scandalous voter suppression witnessed in several states, and Russia’s blatant manipulation of social media. You are our best and only hope. We must save America from the abyss is it falling into, and begin to repaid the damage done. Yes, we must reshape the role of police, and eradicate the brutality against our black brothers. We have to address the chasm of inequality before we become a third world economy with a few billionaires and a general population that is dirt poor, and no middle classes to speak of. We must reform education, banking, healthcare, immigration and prisons.

Even before we begin this massive and daunting task, we must begin to rebuild the core of American society because we are divided right down to the ground. America divided cannot overcome its challenges and it cannot withstand the forces out to destroy our country. The Biden tent must be so big, so inclusive, and so generous, that it must welcome all except a very small minority of Americans: the toxic far right, the white supremacists, who have already fallen to a powerful brainwashing program. The Biden tent must build a strong emotional connection with centrists and progressives, and must even gain the respect and partial support of center-right voters who might have voted GOP if the candidate were Mitt Romney, not an insane third world dictator too unstable for public office.

You beat Bernie and Elizabeth, both admirable and worthy candidates, but America decided you were better set to win votes in the middle, and you did. You beat Mayor Pete, but please call him frequently to ask his advice. Please listen to the progressives, take onboard their most important ideas, but do not let them derail your agenda. America loves hard workers, and America must get back to believing that anything’s possible for those who get up early and work hard to make a dream true. Please try to restore the unity that once allowed a CEO and a plumber to chat in the elevator about their baseball team, though they are of different skin color, religion, income group, and education levels.

The war between progressives and centrists is no accident. It’s been fueled by underground think tanks and sponsored by far right PACs that know how to sow discord anywhere. They know we can’t steer America back to health if we’re bickering like preschoolers. Progressives, bless their hearts, are passionate, genuine, honest people. And very easily manipulated. You need them on your team, but not at the helm.

President Biden, please create a core that can become the emotional center of America’s soul. The alt-right has no chance in an America where the center and the far left are walking down the street with arms linked.

PS — congrats on the attendance numbers at your inauguration: almost as many as Barack!
