Brilliant article thank you!
White guilt is as useless as any other form of guilt. I’ve been saying this for a while now, and have been working on some duck feather grease that instantly sheds any kind of guilt a friend or coworker may try to put on my back.
I try to channel some cheesy zen saying like “Be the change you wish to see in the world” and “do no harm (but take no shit). I am guilty of a lot of things. Envy, sloth, gossiping, wishing I were someone else, daydreaming a lot, wishing I could wake up mega wealthy tomorrow morning, etc. But I am not guilty of white privilege. I am not guilty of any act that helped kill George Floyd. I did not contribute to the police brutality against black people that somehow became ‘normal’ in America’s big cities. I didn’t do it.
I’d like to be the change we wish to see in the world. Often not sure what that looks like, not how to go about it, where to start.
But if you start by telling me it’s all my fault and somehow I have to wear this, then we’re off to a poor start.
We have a giant problem to fix, and we’ll need to fix it with unity and love and respect for one another. We could start by shunning all divisive forces and instead focus on what unites us.
